Seppuku, also known as harakiri, is a form of ritual suicide that originated in Japan and was practiced by samurai as part of their bushido (code of honour). It was a way for samurai to restore honour to themselves, their family, or their lord in the face of disgrace, failure, or imminent capture by enemies.

The act involved the samurai cutting open their abdomen with a short sword (typically a tantō), symbolizing their courage and sincerity. A second, known as a kaishakunin, would often be present to perform a decapitating strike after the initial cut, ensuring a swift death and reducing prolonged suffering.
